Woman dies in I-64 shooting, police say

A woman died after a shooting Wednesday evening on I-64 in York County, according to a press release from Virginia State Police.

Almost no details about the shooting have been released, but it happened near the 242-mile marker in York County, police said. State troopers responded to the scene around 6 p.m.

According to state police, a 2024 blue Honda SUV ran off the roadway and struck a guardrail just west of the 243-mile marker, which is near Busch Gardens. The driver of the vehicle, an unnamed woman, was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she died, police said.

No information about the shooting itself has been released. When asked for more information, a police spokesperson said the investigation was still “very active.”

All eastbound lanes of I-64 at the 242-mile marker were shut down for several hours for the investigation, police said. A traffic diversion is in place at Humelsine Parkway and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.

No other details were provided.

Police are asking for the public’s help with information. Anyone who may have witnessed the Honda SUV, or observed any interactions between this vehicle and another vehicle prior to the 243-mile marker, are asked to contact State Police at [email protected] or to call 804-750-8788.
