Apple TV+’s new thriller The Lost Bus is one of the streamer’s most anticipated releases of 2025. The survival drama stars Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera as a bus driver and teacher, respectively, who have to save school kids from a raging wildfire. Now that the film is playing in select theaters, when can you watch it on Apple TV+?
Directed by Paul Greengrass, The Lost Bus tells the harrowing true story of a school bus driver, Kevein McKay (McConaughey), and a dedicated teacher, Mary Ludwig (Ferrera), who heroically rescued 22 children from a deadly California wildfire. The film is based on the 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California’s history. The disaster claimed at least 85 lives and destroyed nearly 19,000 buildings, devastating most of the town of Paradise.
McConaughey’s teenage son, Levi, and his mother, Kay, also appear in the film playing his character’s son and mother. “I never thought it was something I’d do,” he admitted in an interview with ABC Studios. “I’ve been in scenes with my mother before, but that’s because Richard Linklater just cast her [in 2011’s Bernie] and put her to sing with me and I didn’t know about it.”
The 55-year-old actor continued, “But then my son taking an interest in it and then auditioning for it and getting it and then mom coming out to have the three of us in a scene, that did feel quite special.”
So far, the film has earned a solid 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Film critic Katie Doll from CBR wrote, “The Lost Bus is epic, to say the least, designed to make audiences feel a vicarious rush in a non-stop drive for survival.”
In his review for The Wrap, Steve Pond praised Greengrass’ work on the film. “There are times when the fiery landscape is staggering and times when it screams CG, but few directors can rev up a movie and keep it at a fever pitch the way Greengrass can.”
