BALTIMORE, MD—The national average price for a gallon of gasoline has risen slightly in the past week, but drivers in some areas, particularly on the West Coast, are seeing prices drop, according to a report from GasBuddy.
The average U.S. gas price increased by 2.2 cents to $3.14 per gallon, data from GasBuddy’s survey of over 150,000 gas stations showed. The current price is unchanged from a month ago and is 1.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The average price for diesel also saw a small increase, rising 0.7 cents to $3.665 per gallon.
GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, attributes the national average’s slight rise to a phenomenon known as “price cycling” in certain states, which took place just before the seasonal shift to cheaper winter-blend gasoline. States like Florida, Ohio, Michigan, and Maryland experienced double-digit jumps in average prices.
“Now that much of the nation has begun the transition to cheaper winter gasoline, and with driving demand seasonally tapering off as temperatures dip, gas prices face additional downward pressure,” De Haan said. “We’re still on track to potentially see the national average fall below $3 per gallon for the first time in years this autumn.”
The most expensive gas in the country can be found on the West Coast, with California leading at $4.62 per gallon, followed by Washington at $4.56 and Hawaii at $4.42. However, some of the biggest weekly price decreases were also seen on the West Coast.
Conversely, the states with the lowest average prices are Oklahoma ($2.63), Mississippi ($2.66), and Louisiana ($2.71).
The report also noted that oil prices saw a slight decrease in the past week but remain in the low-$60 per barrel range. According to the Energy Information Administration’s latest report, U.S. oil and gasoline inventories both saw a decrease.
In and around the Nottingham area, the cheapest gas this week could be found at these locations…
