Water main break snarls traffic on Thomasville Road, lead to boil water notice

Monday evening repairs to a water main along Thomasville Road gridlocked the Tuesday morning commute for those heading downtown.

It also led to a boil water notice for residents living along parts of the major thoroughfare.

Traffic was backed up from South Ride, where a water main valve was being replaced, to Live Oak Plantation Road the morning of Oct. 14.

That snarled traffic on Thomasville Road and spilled over to Mahan Drive, causing extended commutes.

A city spokesperson said road work is on track to be completed before the Tuesday afternoon commute.

Residents living along Thomasville Road in the area around Betton Road are also under a boil water notice, according to a text from the city of Tallahassee.

City officials issued a “precautionary boil water notice” to about 200 customers shortly after 11 a.m. on Oct. 14.

According to an email sent to residents of a nearby apartment complex who were without water, a water main had broken and was undergoing repairs.

City officials said the repairs were for a “water main valve replacement.” The official said water has also been restored to the residents though the boil water notice remains.

The city had posted on X the night before, around 7:30 p.m., that “due to a water utility repair at Thomasville Road & South Ride, the southbound inside lane of Thomasville will be closed starting at 9 p.m. tonight, Oct. 13. Traffic will be shifted to the outside lane while the repair is made.”

The boil water advisory “will remain in effect until the problem has been corrected and a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink,” the text from the city says. “When this occurs, you will receive a similar notice advising you that the water is safe to drink.”

Everyone in the area has been advised to boil “all water used for drinking, making ice, food preparation, brushing teeth, and washing dishes,” it adds. “A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. As an alternative, bottled water may be used.”

As of noon, crews were seen working on a large pit in the roadway, in the southbound lanes near South Ride.
