HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The University of Alabama in Huntsville is reporting an increase in undergraduate enrollment for a second year in a row.

UAH said it enrolled 1,220 new freshmen for the fall of 2025.

“We’re really happy with our class,” said Dr. Michael Poll, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management. “We increased the class slightly, but we also increased the class profile.”

The freshman class for Fall 2025 had an average ACT score of 27 and an average GPA of 3.97, according to Poll.

He said this reflects the high quality of education UAH students receive.

“People understand that it’s a high, high quality of education.”

Total undergraduate enrollment is up to 6,743 students, according to UAH.

Poll said the university is growing at a controlled pace and focusing on growing in-state enrollment.

However, he said a relatively new scholarship program is bringing in more students from Tennessee.

“We do offer in-state tuition for our Tennessee residents, and that has been a positive,” he said. “The early signs for the fall of 2026, are showing even more interest in that.”

UAH started the Tennessee Resident Scholarship Program in the fall of 2021.

One of the first program recipients was Chloe Brant.

“Not being able to afford college was one of my biggest struggles, or one of my biggest fears,” Brant told News 19. “Coming to UAH, they made it really helpful that as a Tennessee student, I get in-state tuition.”

Brant is now a senior, but said she’s grateful to be part of that program.

Poll said UAH provides ample scholarship opportunities.

“We do everything we can to make it affordable,” he said.

With growing freshman numbers, Poll said one challenge that the university is monitoring is housing.

“Housing is tight,” Poll said. “We’re looking at public and private partnerships to possibly increase our residence halls.”

“We’re nearly at capacity now, so that’s something we’re considering,” he added.

According to UAH, graduate enrollment is also on the rise. The university is celebrating a 7% increase in new master’s students over last year. It said those gains are in the colleges of business, engineering, and nursing.
