President Trump filed an emergency appeal Friday, asking the Supreme Court to approve the deployment of the National Guard to Chicago amid his immigration crackdown.

- U.S. District Judge April Perry temporarily blocked Trump’s deployment of the National Guard last week.
- In issuing her decision, Perry said, “I simply cannot credit [the Trump administration’s] declarations to the extent they contradict state and local law enforcement. … DHS’ perception of events are unreliable.”
- The order remains in effect until Oct. 23, but a follow-up hearing on Oct. 22 is scheduled to determine a possible extension of the order.
Trump has suggested multiple times he would be willing to invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act to bypass court rulings and send the National Guard to cities without state approval.
What’s inside: The filing alleges the need for the National Guard in Chicago to “prevent ongoing and intolerable risks to the lives and safety of federal personnel.”
- Solicitor General John Sauer who wrote the appeal said the lower court’s ruling “impinges on the President’s authority and needlessly endangers federal personnel and property.”
- “In recent weeks, federal officers in Chicago have been threatened and assaulted, attacked in a harrowing pre-planned ambush involving many assailants,” the appeal said.
- The filing also said DHS and law enforcement have been forced to “operate under the constant threat of mob violence.”
