It’s the second-to-last weekend of summer. The autumnal equinox falls on Monday, September 22nd. Soon enough, it’ll be Halloween.

My weekend streaming guide is out, in case you’re looking for something to watch. Only Murders In The Building is back, though I wasn’t particularly impressed with the first three episodes.

In any case, it’s Connections time. Let’s group these words!

If you’re looking for Saturday’s Connections guide, it’s right here.

How To Play Connections

Connections is the second-most popular NYT Games puzzle game outside of the main crossword itself, and an extremely fun, free offering that will get your brain moving every day. Play it right here.

The goal is to take a group of 16 words and find links between four pairs of four of them. They could be specific categories of terms, or they could be little world puzzles where words may come before or after them you need to figure out. And they get more complicated from there.

There is only one set of right answers for this, and you only get a certain number of tries so you can’t just spam around until you find something. There are difficulty tiers coded by color, which will usually go from yellow, blue/green to purple as difficulty increases, so know that going in and when you start linking them together.

You pick the four words you think are linked and either you will get a solve and a lit up row that shows you how you were connected. If you’re close, it will tell you that you’re one away. Again, four mistakes you lose, but if you want to know the answers without failing, either come here, or delete your web cookies and try again. If you want to play more puzzles, you can get an NYT Games subscription to access the full archives of all past puzzles.

The yellow group made itself apparent quite quickly today. The obvious connection between DOOR, GATE, HATCH and PORTAL was there and no red herrings in the rest of the words made it an obvious guess. From here, I was a bit more stumped.

At first, I thought maybe some of the words were pointing to tools you used to find things. A DOWNING rod paired with a KEY and a COMPASS. I tried that with SCALE and it didn’t work. It was DOWNING that led me to the correct answer. As soon as I thought of DOWNING Street, I started looking for other streets. Sure enough, there was FLEET Street – as in the Demon Barber of Fleet Street – and Wall Street and Main Street. I went back to COMPASS next and realized that it did group with KEY and SCALE if you’re think about maps. I wasn’t 100% sure what could go with these, but I tried INSET and it was a good enough guess.

That left me with the Blue Group: BEAT, BEST, BETTER and TOP. The last four are always easy!

I still think this game needs to add an extra layer of challenge to make guessing all four groups more satisfying, but I suspect that will never happen. Oh well! Have a great rest of your weekend!
