:: Thailand’s top court rules ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra must serve a year in jail

:: It ruled Thaksin’s detention in a hospital VIP wing was unlawful, and didn’t count as time served

:: Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thaksin’s youngest daughter

“Today is another historic day where he is the first (ex) prime minister to go to jail. This… it weighs heavy. However, we remain in good spirits—both my father and our family.”

“Me and my family are worried about my father. We are proud that my dad has created so much history for the country, including useful policies that benefited the people.”

The judges said Thaksin did not have a severe illness and his hospitalization could not be counted as time served, adding that the responsibility did not solely lie with the doctors and that the polarizing billionaire intentionally prolonged his hospital stay.

On return from 15 years of self-imposed exile in 2023, Thaksin spent only a few hours in prison before being transferred to a hospital, complaining of heart trouble and chest pains, prompting widespread skepticism and public outrage.

His eight-year sentence for conflicts of interest and abuse of power was commuted to one year by the king and Thaksin was released on parole after just six months, the entirety of which he had spent in the VIP wing of a hospital.
