Stop the Violence rally held at Montgomery mass shooting scene

A small crowd gathered Monday afternoon at the site of a Saturday night mass shooting in downtown Montgomery for a Stop the Violence rally.

At least two people were killed and 12 others injured during the shooting at the intersection of Bibb and Commerce streets. Local activist Ja’Mel Brown organized the rally at the intersection, which was attended by about 12 people. Several of those attending broadcast the rally on social media outlets.

Brown questioned the lack of police officers in the area the night of the shooting, saying he was downtown and didn’t see officers at the intersection where a large crowd had gathered. Brown said more officers are needed for future events downtown.

Police Chief James Graboys said in a Sunday news conference that there was an elevated law enforcement presence downtown at the time. He said five officers were “very close” to the scene when the shooting took place and responded quickly.

The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. Oct. 4, police said. There was a large group standing on the sidewalk on Bibb Street near a business when the shooting started, Graboys said.

“An exchange of gunfire erupted,” he said. “Multiple people pulled out weapons and started firing.” One of the people shot was an intended target of the shooter, Graboys said, and two of the injured people were armed.
