ANNAPOLIS, MD—A quick stop for drinks in Annapolis turned into a life-changing moment for a Virginia resident who won a $1 million top prize on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket.
The lucky player, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed her winnings at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on October 17, 2025, accompanied by her son. Her windfall came from a spontaneous purchase of a $20 $1 Million Royale ticket.
The winner, who has played the lottery “on and off” for about 10 years, told officials she typically follows her instincts when choosing games. On the day of her big win, she visited Annapolis Wine and Spirits at 1307 Forest Drive in Annapolis before driving home to Virginia and “couldn’t resist” the look of the $1 Million Royale ticket.
The next day, she scratched the ticket and immediately suspected she had won, but sought confirmation. “I had my son double check it,” she recalled. “He told me to take it to get scanned, and that’s when I found out it was real!”
Describing the experience as “a shock, but a blessing,” the new millionaire shared plans to use the prize money primarily to support her family, specifically to help cover medical expenses and ensure a memorable holiday season for her loved ones. “I’m thankful,” she said. “This will really help my family.”
In addition to caring for her family, the winner plans to save a portion of her prize and hopes her story encourages others to “play responsibly and dream big.” She added with a smile, “Maybe I’ll get lucky again one day.”
