The Summer I Turned Pretty

Amazon

Fans were pretty stunned when the finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon Prime Video did not turn out to be the finale after all. Well, it’s the last episode of the show, but immediately Amazon announced that there would be a movie as a follow-up, an extremely rare, surprising move. Fans thought they were done, but it turns out it will be quite a while until it’s released.

The not-great news is that while this was just announced, they’re not…actually in production yet. Creator Jenny Han spoke on The Today Show about the project, saying that she and co-showrunner “have finished a draft. So we’re shuffling along.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty’s movie release date? Well, it’s not great news on that front, due to the above. “It’s still a little too soon to say… We don’t know when it’s coming out, but not next year.”

That would mean that it would be at least a 2027 premiere date for the movie, which, at the earlier would be 15 months from now, and that’s with the generous assumption that we’re talking January 1st. If the movie is still in a first draft and far from production, I would expect this to be at least two years until the movie is here. The gap between seasons 1 and 2 of the show was about a year. The gap between seasons 2 and 3 was two years. But this is just a movie, right? 3-4 episodes strung together? Maybe, but don’t assume it will take half the time to get here because of that, that’s not usually how things work in the industry.

I’m not exactly clear if the plan is to make a movie that purely airs on Amazon, or if it also lands some sort of theatrical release. It could be both, with superfans heading to theaters to see it and yes, the show certainly has superfans. The series has recently surged on the Nielsen rankings in its final season, and I can see why the movie idea may have come to fruition. But here’s Jenny Han’s explanation via press release:

“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”

I mean sure, why not. But the bad news here is that fans thinking that the show was giving them its conclusion this week now have to wait at least 1.5-2 years for more if 2026 is not even close to a consideration. Hopefully we’ll have a more official window soon.
