The Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays face off today in Game 5 of the ALCS at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, with the series at two games apiece.

Toronto continues to put on an offensive show this postseason, tagging the Mariners for eight runs last night after a 13-run barrage on Wednesday, knocking Seattle starter Luis Castillo out after 2.1 innings. The Blue Jays have outscored Seattle 21–6 over the past two games, seizing momentum as the series reaches its midpoint and after dropping the first two games at home.

Max Scherzer was lights out in his first start this month, defying expectations and Father Time. The 41-year-old tossed 5.2 innings of two-run ball to earn the win in Game 4. The weeks of rest clearly paid off for the future Hall of Famer.

Scherzer’s command and experience steadied a Blue Jays staff that had struggled earlier in the series, putting Toronto in position to take control. He lived up to his nickname, “Mad Max,” furiously shouting at manager John Schneider in the fifth inning, letting him know he would not be exiting the game.

Scherzer had plenty of offensive support, including a solo home run by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — his fifth of the postseason. Vladdy Jr. came into the 2025 MLB postseason as an underperformer in October, without a win in the playoffs. The Blue Jays now stand two wins away from their first World Series appearance since 1993.

In Game 5, Kevin Gausman gets the start for Toronto while Seattle plans to start Bryce Miller, in a rematch of Game 1.

The Blue Jays’ Gausman comes in with a 2.38 ERA over two starts this postseason. He allowed just two runs in Game 1 but got the loss as Toronto scored just one run off Miller, while the Seattle bullpen finished the game with three scoreless innings.

Seattle will again look to Miller to quiet Toronto’s bats, with Bryan Woo likely waiting in the bullpen if needed.

Prediction

Expect a tighter, lower-scoring contest than the past two games. Gausman’s experience and splitter command should give Toronto an edge, but Seattle’s lineup is too talented to go quietly at home.

Prediction: Blue Jays 4, Mariners 3
