Nevada (1-5, 0-2 MWC) faces New Mexico (3-3, 0-2 MWC) tonight in a Week 8 Mountain West matchup at University Stadium in Albuquerque.

Nevada enters the matchup facing serious headwinds. The Wolf Pack have struggled to find consistency on both sides of the ball, ranking 124th nationally in total offense (309.5 yards per game) and 133rd in scoring (14.5 points per game).

Quarterback Chubba Purdy has accounted for much of the team’s offense, throwing for 494 yards and rushing for 292 yards with two touchdowns, but he’s been turnover-prone with eight interceptions and just one passing touchdown. Nevada’s defense has been overworked, allowing 379.0 yards and 28.7 points per game.

There are a few bright spots: the Wolf Pack are one of the least penalized teams in the FBS (35.2 penalty yards per game, 13th nationally), and defensive end Dylan LaBarbera continues to make an impact off the edge. But the team’s red-zone woes (68.4% conversion rate, 130th nationally) and turnover margin (–11, 135th in FBS) have limited its ability to finish drives and stay in games.

New Mexico, meanwhile, looks to capitalize at home and earn its first conference win. The Lobos boast a far more balanced offense, averaging 369.2 yards and 29.2 points per game, driven by quarterback Jack Layne, who’s thrown for 1,277 yards and eight touchdowns with a 66.7% completion rate.

Running back Damon Bankston (307 yards, 3 TDs) and receiver Keagan Johnson (364 yards, 2 TDs) headline a versatile unit that’s been able to move the ball both on the ground and through the air.

Defensively, New Mexico has struggled to contain opposing passing attacks, ranking 126th nationally in passing yards allowed (265.3 per game), but they’ve been sturdier against the run (126.7 yards allowed per game, 47th). The Lobos will aim to improve on third downs — where opponents are converting 44.2% of attempts — and in the red zone, where they’ve allowed scores on 89.5% of trips (102nd nationally).

Both teams have turnover issues. New Mexico ranks 133rd in turnover margin (–10), but they’ve been disciplined in avoiding penalties, with the Lobos ranking 18th in the country (36.5 penalty yards per game).

Prediction

New Mexico enters the matchup as the clear favorite, especially at home, where its offense has been notably sharper. If Layne and Bankston can establish rhythm early, the Lobos’ balanced attack should be enough to outpace a Nevada team still searching for stability.

Projected Score: New Mexico 28, Nevada 14
