KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Based on preliminary information, police say a crash involving eight vehicles that sent two children and a woman to the hospital Monday started when a military vehicle crashed into a semi-truck.

The crash happened at 7:50 a.m. on I-94 eastbound near Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo Township. Michigan State Police say preliminary information indicates a military vehicle lost control after changing lanes and hit a semi-truck, which crashed into three passenger vehicles and caused a chain reaction with three more vehicles. Eight vehicles were involved in the crash, police say.

A 10-year-old child was hospitalized with serious injuries after the crash but as of Tuesday was listed as stable, according to police. A 40-year-old woman and a 4-year-old girl were also hospitalized, but their injuries were minor, MSP said.

The road was closed for nearly eight hours following the crash.

MSP is investigating the crash. Troopers believe speed was a factor.

“MSP would like to remind drivers to stay alert for slowed or stopped traffic, especially during heavy traffic periods,” troopers said.
