BALTIMORE, MD—Marylanders are the nation’s most enthusiastic lottery players, spending an estimated $867 per resident annually on tickets—the highest lottery spend in the U.S.—according to a new study from a crypto casino and sports betting platform.

The study, released by Duelbits, ranked the states based on a “Lottery Enthusiasm Score,” which combined per capita spending on lottery tickets with per capita Google searches for terms like ‘lucky numbers.’

Maryland was ranked No. 1, earning a score of 81.50 out of 100. The Old Line State’s high rank was driven primarily by its spending figure, which the study calculated at $867 per 100,000 residents, but also by a rate of 65.46 Google searches for ‘lucky number’ per 100,000 residents each year.

“The study has revealed that residents of Maryland are the most enthusiastic lottery players, spending the most money on lottery tickets, and have the highest number of searches per capita for lucky numbers,” a spokesperson for Duelbits said in the release.

Top 5 Most Enthusiastic Lottery States

Following Maryland, the states ranking highest for enthusiasm were:

  • Maryland: Score 81.50, $867 annual spend per 100,000 residents
  • Florida: Score 73.96, $403 annual spend per 100,000 residents
  • Louisiana: Score 67.42, $274 annual spend per 100,000 residents
  • Georgia: Score 53.27, $492 annual spend per 100,000 residents
  • Delaware: Score 41.74, $399 annual spend per 100,000 residents

Florida, which ranked second overall, led the nation in search interest, with 101.92 Google searches for ‘lucky numbers’ per 100,000 residents, but its spending was significantly lower than Maryland’s.

Utah Ranks Last

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Utah ranked as the least enthusiastic lottery state with a score of just 10.00 out of 100. The state, which does not operate its own lottery, recorded the lowest search interest for lucky numbers at 6.56 per 100,000 residents.

The study noted that several other states also had no data available for lottery spending, including Nevada, Alabama, Wyoming and Alaska, which all finished at the bottom of the rankings.
