SPARROWS POINT, MD—A new steel fabrication factory is set to open at the former site of Bethlehem Steel, bringing 150 manufacturing jobs back to the area.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced Tuesday that JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill, a steel piling company, will open a new 200,000-square-foot facility at Tradepoint Atlantic. The company’s $50 million investment, supported by more than $1.8 million in state and county funding, marks its first expansion to the East Coast from its Houston, Texas, headquarters.

“There are those who said that once the Bethlehem Steel plant closed down, steel would never come back to Baltimore,” Moore said. “Well, today, we don’t just prove the doubters wrong, we prove the dreamers right.”

The plant is expected to be completed by the end of next year, with operations beginning in early 2027. It will be located on a 13-acre site on the Sparrows Point peninsula, which was once home to the massive Bethlehem Steel complex.

Economic comeback

The announcement is a significant step in the economic revitalization of the area. The Bethlehem Steel plant, once a major employer, closed in 2012. The site was later transformed into Tradepoint Atlantic, a multi-modal logistics hub.

“This investment by JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill in a new facility at Tradepoint Atlantic is proof of concept that highlights the unique strategic connectivity we provide manufacturers,” said Kerry Doyle, Tradepoint Atlantic’s managing director.

The new facility will convert steel plates and coils into structural steel for infrastructure projects across the U.S. Its location near the Port of Baltimore will give the company access to marine infrastructure and a wider customer base.

State and local support

To help with the project’s costs, the Maryland Department of Commerce is working to approve a $1 million conditional loan for the company through its Advantage Maryland program. The company is also eligible for up to $750,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits.

In addition, Baltimore County is providing a $100,000 conditional loan to support the facility’s expenses.

“I’m proud of the work that went into bringing this great opportunity and jobs to our community,” said Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier.

JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill is a partnership between JD Fields & Company and HDM Steel Pipe, a Turkish manufacturing company. This new facility will be the company’s first on the East Coast.
