The Kannada film emerged as a surprise box office hit after releasing on September 30, 2022. The Hindi version was released a month later to cater to the audience demands. The original Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam versions landed on Amazon Prime Video in November 2022, and the Hindi version got a digital debut on Netflix in December 2022. An English version was also released on Netflix later. Kantara made its Netflix debut as ninth most-watched non-English film on the platform and slid down to the tenth position next week before dropping out of the weekly global list by Netflix.
Now, three years after it first released, the film has recorded one million views and 2.5 million watch-hours in the week ending October 12. The Hindi version of the film is now the world’s eighth most-watched non-English film on Netflix this week. It also ranked among the top ten most-watched film on the platform in six countries including India, Maldives, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates.
When the film hit theatres, the Rishab Shetty film scored more than $35 million in a month at the box office. It gave tough competition to Bollywood releases which hit theatres around the same time. These included Ajay Devgn-starrer Thank God and Ram Setu headlined by Akshay Kumar.
