CARNEY, MD—Harford Hills Elementary School officials were alerted to an incident on Monday after a student was found to have written highly inappropriate and threatening statements in a notebook, according to a letter sent to parents by Principal Lisa Balmages.

The writings reportedly included messages about self-harm and a list of names of students and staff members the student wished to harm.

School administration immediately removed the student from the classroom and contacted the School Resource Officer (SRO) and the Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) Department of School Safety for assistance.

BCPS officials, in partnership with the Baltimore County Police Department, conducted a thorough investigation, including a behavioral threat assessment and wellness check. Following the review, the SRO and safety manager determined that the threats were “not a credible threat.”

The student is currently receiving appropriate services and will also face disciplinary consequences in line with the Student Handbook and Policy, according to the letter.

In her communication, Principal Balmages emphasized the school system’s serious approach to threats and its comprehensive safety procedures.

The school is offering support to students and families affected by the incident. A school counselor is available to speak with students, and staff from the Department of Student Services are providing additional support on site. The school is also offering resources to parents to help them discuss the incident with their children.

The exact number of individuals named in the notebook was not immediately disclosed.
