EDGEWOOD, MD—Harford County Sheriff’s Office detectives have successfully closed a nearly 18-year-old homicide case after a new witness came forward, leading to murder charges against an Edgewood man who was previously a person of interest.
Gary Williams, of Edgewood, was recently indicted on charges related to the 2007 murder of David Arnold Byrd Jr. Williams is currently serving a sentence for an unrelated crime in a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility and will be taken into HCSO custody upon his release.
The case dates back to Aug. 26, 2007, when deputies were dispatched to the 1900 block of Edgewater Drive in Edgewood for a reported stabbing. Deputies found David Arnold Byrd Jr., an adult male, with a single stab wound to his upper body. Byrd was transported to a local trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the initial investigation, Williams was identified as a person of interest. However, detectives were unable to gather enough evidence at the time to formally charge him in connection with Byrd’s death.
Over the past eighteen years, the homicide investigation remained active. Detectives recently located and interviewed a witness whose credible account provided investigators with the necessary evidence to move forward with an indictment.
Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler commended the closure of the case, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to seeking justice regardless of the time elapsed.
“No matter how long it takes, solving every homicide case remains a top priority for our Office,” Gahler said. “We want justice and closure for the loved ones of the victim, we want the offender to be held accountable, and we want Harford County to remain the safe place that it is.”
