BEL AIR, MD—Harford County government is partnering with the local library system and a youth foundation to launch its annual “SOCKtober” collection drive throughout October to gather new socks, hats, and gloves for people experiencing homelessness and other community members in need.
The drive seeks to address a critical but often overlooked shortage of warm essentials at local shelters as cold weather approaches.
New socks, hats, mittens, and gloves of all sizes will be collected through Oct. 31. Donations will be distributed locally to individuals and families, including those served by veterans’ organizations.
“As the colder weather approaches, warm socks, gloves and hats bring real comfort to those in need,” Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly said in a statement. “Please consider making a donation to help our community members who need it most.”
The county is sponsoring the drive in partnership with the Harford County Public Library and We Cancerve, a foundation that organizes giving opportunities for youth to support homeless, sick, and foster children.
Collection boxes are located in county government buildings, including parks and recreation facilities, senior centers, and all public libraries.
Residents can visit the county website, https://www.harfordcountymd.gov/SOCKtober, for more information and to download a sharable flyer (below).
