ESSEX, MD—A long-time Maryland Lottery player from Essex hit the jackpot using a unique number-picking strategy: the ages of his grandchildren. John Lang won the $50,000 top prize in the Bonus Match 5 draw game, the Maryland Lottery announced this week.

The retiree matched all five winning numbers on a ticket he purchased at Mace Liquors, located at 507 Mace Avenue in Baltimore County.

Lang said the win came after he took a break from the game.

“I asked them to check my numbers. They said ‘Mr. John, you just won $50,000’,” Lang recalled of his return to the store the day after buying the ticket.

According to the Baltimore County resident, he enjoys playing various combinations, with his grandchildren’s ages being a favorite set of numbers. Lang is diligent about keeping his numbers current, explaining that if a 20-year-old grandchild turns 21, he immediately removes the number 20 from his rotation and replaces it with 21.

When asked about his plans for the sudden windfall, Lang said he intends to put some of the money away for safekeeping and dedicate a portion of the prize toward home improvement projects.
