ANNAPOLIS, MD—Gov. Wes Moore has officially proclaimed October 2025 as the Fifth Annual Maryland Horse Month, a celebration recognizing the state’s horse industry for its significant contributions to the economy, culture, and preservation of open space.

The month-long celebration, led by the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB), will feature more than 60 horse-related events showcasing over 5,000 equines and is expected to draw over 100,000 spectator visits.

“Maryland’s thriving horse industry is a crucial part of Maryland agriculture,” said Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks. “I encourage all Marylanders to experience at least one horse-related event during October Horse Month.”

The horse industry in Maryland has an estimated annual economic impact of $2.9 billion and supports over 28,000 jobs. The state has more horses per square mile than any other in the nation.

October will feature a lineup of world-class and local competitions:

The schedule also includes jousting championship finals, rodeos, farm tours, therapeutic riding exhibitions, and Steeplechase races across the state.

Digital Hub for Horse Park System Unveiled

In conjunction with the fifth annual observance, the MHIB has launched MarylandHorsePark.org, a new digital hub for the statewide Maryland Horse Park System. Developed with support from the Maryland Office of Tourism, the website highlights equestrian destinations including Fair Hill, the Prince George’s Equestrian Center, the Maryland Horse Library & Education Center, and the soon-to-be-renovated Pimlico Race Course.

“Whether it’s watching world-class competitions, exploring our scenic trails, or visiting a local farm, there are countless opportunities for everyone to spend time with horses and experience the joy they bring,” said Anne Litz, Executive Director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board.

The new site offers trail guides, event calendars, and tourism itineraries to encourage exploration of Maryland’s horse country, from the Assateague Ponies to trails in Garrett County.

Visitors to the state spent $11.6 billion on travel-related expenses in 2020, and the tourism industry generated $1.7 billion in state and local taxes, according to the Maryland Office of Tourism.
