TOWSON, MD—Goucher College has launched a new initiative to support first-generation students in Baltimore, funded by more than $250,000 in grants from the state and the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
The new Baltimore CAP (College Access and Preparation) Program @ Goucher aims to provide free academic, career, and college preparation support to 100 students from Baltimore City and Baltimore County. The program will serve students from Baltimore City Public Schools through the Next Generation Scholars grant program and students from Loch Raven High School and the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women through the Baltimore Future-Ready Scholars initiative.
“In a time when national headlines often focus on the challenges Baltimore faces, Goucher is making it clear: We stand with Baltimore,” said Goucher College President Kent Devereaux. “Through Baltimore CAP, we are not just investing in students—we are inspiring Baltimore’s next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers.”
The initiative, supported by Gov. Wes Moore, will include a free summer program on Goucher’s campus to give students early exposure to college life. The program will also offer one-on-one and small-group mentoring, career exploration, and job placements.
The new program builds on Goucher’s existing efforts to support first-generation students, including the LAUNCH Scholars Network, a comprehensive four-year program for its undergraduates. The Baltimore CAP program is designed to create a strong pipeline of college- and career-ready students from Baltimore-area high schools.
The program will also provide support for high school teachers and families to ensure students have a strong support system.
“This is about collective action—schools, colleges, nonprofits, and businesses coming together to build a better future for our young people,” Devereaux said.
