
New York State Police have identified the driver who died in a fiery crash involving a garbage truck on Interstate 590 this week.
The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-590, between Elmwood and Highland avenues, just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Daniel P. Schaertel, 67, of Rochester, was driving a sports car on the highway when he attempted to pass a garbage truck but instead struck the truck and was forced to the right, where it became wrapped around the front of the truck, according to State Police. The car then burst into flames.
Schaertel died at the scene. The driver and passenger in the garbage truck were not injured. Troopers continue to investigate the fatal crash.
Who was Daniel Schaertel?
Daniel Paul Schaertel was a software engineer who loved to hike with his wife of 45 years and to explore national parks with his family. He was a member of Community of the Savior church in Rochester, where he met with a bible study group weekly for more than 25 years, according to his obituary. Schaertel most recently worked as a senior software engineer for the Harris Corporation in Rochester, according to his linkedin profile.
He loved the arts – including playing the guitar – and playing golf. He died driving a prized posssession, his 1973 Corvette, which was “his most prized gift” from his daughter and son-in-law, his obituary read.
“Family was everything to Dan,” his obituary said. “He never failed to show up for those he loved.”
Schaertel was survived by his wife Lisa; daughters Holly Chatters, Kristin Nielsen and Lauren Smith; eight grandchildren as well as his mother Irene and brother Timothy, according to his obituary. He was predeceased by his father Peter and brother David.
“Ever since I was a child I looked up to him with great admiration and respect,” Tim Schaertel said of his brother, who was 14 years older. “I know in my heart that Dan was a faithful Christian, and that is why I can have a peace about his passing despite how tragic it was, and despite how much he will be missed by his family and friends.”
