Adolescence just racked up eight Emmy wins between two shows over the past week, including top acting awards in the limited series category. But will it actually be a limited series with all its huge success, both in terms of acclaim and its enormous viewership on Netflix? It’s complicated.

First, you may be wondering what Emmys it actually won on Sunday, and those are:

  • Best Limited Series
  • Best Lead Actor – Stephen Graham
  • Best Supporting Actor – (the 15 year old first-time actor) Owen Cooper
  • Best Supporting Actress – Erin Doherty
  • Best Writing – Jack Thorn and Stephen Graham
  • Best Directing – Philip Barantini
  • Best Casting – Shaheen Baig
  • Best Cinematography – Matthew Lewis

Those directing and cinematography awards were no doubt due in part because each episode of this show was shot in a single, technically improbably take, something we’ve rarely seen in the industry.

But an Adolescence season 2?

One point to consider here is that it would not be a continuation of the existing story. If it did exist, it would be about some other sort of teen-based controversy or crime. While the original intention was to make this a limited series, in April 2025, Plan B co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner told Deadline they were speaking to director Philip Barantini about the “next iteration” of the show. Gardner said they wanted to “widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive.” They want Stephen Graham and Jack Throne back to write as well.

The bad news here is that this was April, and months later we have heard absolutely nothing about a second season of Adolescence since then. Not even rumors. I haven’t seen anything substantial from even Emmy red carpet interviews making news about a possible season 2. So this may not end up happening at all, in the end.

I know there are some that say that there should not be a second season, but I think that if it’s treated like an anthology, new cast, new story but the same excellent writing and filming technique, I don’t see a reason it couldn’t come back for a second go. Now with all these Emmys under its belt, I wonder if this will rekindle talks about the idea, similar to what happened with Shogun when it won all its limited series awards. That went on to be greenlit for two more seasons that weren’t planned, even with half its main cast dead. An anthology idea would be easier to pull off here, but we just don’t have any new information yet, and that’s a bit concerning if you did want to see more of this from this talented team.
