NOTTINGHAM, MD—Baltimore County Councilman David Marks announced on Monday that he is introducing a resolution to put Baltimore County on record opposing the Days Cove discharge permit and urging the state to close the facility.
The resolution will be introduced at the October 6th County Council meeting.
“This resolution puts Baltimore County Council firmly in opposition to the proposal for a new discharge permit at the Days Cove rubble landfill that will impact our waterways in a very harmful way,” Councilman Marks.
The resolution notes the repeated violations at this site, as well as community opposition.
“We thank and applaud Councilman Marks for taking the lead in getting Baltimore County on record as opposing the permit,” said Josh Sines, president of the Essex Middle River Civic Council.
“We support the Council taking this action which will send a message to MDE that the discharge permit as written will not benefit the environment and is opposed by the Baltimore County Council,” added Theaux Le Gardeur, the Gunpowder Riverkeeper.
Councilman Marks noted that the Acting County Executive has refused to publicly oppose the permit, despite numerous requests to her office. “Since the Klausmeier administration will not take a position, it is time for the County Council to step up and assert leadership. The message will be crystal clear from the County Council: deny the permit.”
