WASHINGTON—BMW of North America has issued a “park outside” recall for nearly 200,000 model year 2019 through 2022 vehicles, warning owners that a defect poses a fire risk even when the cars are parked.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a consumer alert, strongly urging owners of the affected vehicles to park outdoors and away from buildings, garages, and other vehicles until the necessary repair is completed.
The risk stems from a faulty engine starter relay that may corrode, leading to overheating and a short circuit, which could potentially ignite a fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven.
The recall affects various BMW models and includes 1,469 2020-2022 Toyota Supra vehicles, which are manufactured by BMW.
The recalled BMW models are:
- 2019-2022 Z4
- 2019-2021 330I
- 2020-2022 X3
- 2020-2022 X4
- 2020-2022 530I
- 2021-2022 430I standard and convertible
- 2022 230I
Due to parts availability, BMW plans to conduct the repair in a phased approach.
Owners are scheduled to receive interim notification letters by mail on Nov. 14. On the same date, vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for the affected vehicles will become searchable on the NHTSA website. A second notice will be mailed once remedy parts are available for installation.
Owners can visit https://www.NHTSA.gov/recalls and enter their license plate number or 17-digit VIN starting Nov. 14 to see if their vehicle is included in the recall.
For questions, owners can call BMW customer service at 800-525-7417 or the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
