TOWSON, MD—The Baltimore County Police Department (BCoPD) is urging residents to heighten their vigilance as the fall season brings earlier sunsets, seasonal weather changes, and the upcoming shift back to Standard Time.
With Daylight Saving Time ending on Sunday, November 2, the department is reminding the community that reduced daylight hours can contribute to increased safety risks, both for property and for drivers on the road.
“The combination of reduced daylight, earlier sunsets, and seasonal weather changes can all contribute to increased safety concerns this time of year,” the department stated in a press release issued on October 15, 2025.
The BCoPD provided a list of key precautions for residents to follow as temperatures begin to drop:
Vehicle and Property Security
With colder weather approaching, the BCoPD is particularly focused on preventing “warm-up thefts”—vehicles stolen while left running and unattended to heat up.
- Prevent Warm-Up Thefts: Never leave a running vehicle unattended and unlocked, even for a moment.
- Secure Vehicles: Always lock car doors, even when parked in your driveway, and ensure all valuables are removed from sight.
- Light Up: Use exterior lights to deter criminals and make it easier for neighbors and police officers to spot suspicious activity.
- Clear Visibility: Trim back overgrown shrubs and bushes around doors and windows to eliminate potential hiding spots for thieves.
Driving Safety
Shorter days and changing road conditions mean drivers must be extra cautious:
- Drive Carefully: Slow down on wet or leaf-covered roads, which can become slick and dangerous.
- Be Alert: Exercise increased caution for pedestrians, cyclists, and school buses, who may be harder to see in the dim light of early morning and late afternoon.
- Vehicle Prep: Check tire pressure and keep essential emergency items like a flashlight and blanket in your vehicle.
