DUNDALK, MD—Baltimore County officials have celebrated the opening of an improved fishing pier at Fleming Park in the historic community of Turner Station.

County Executive Kathy Klausmeier and the Department of Recreation and Parks announced the completion of the project, which they say enhances a “treasured waterfront jewel” on Bear Creek and the Patapsco River.

“Turner Station is a vital historical site in Baltimore County, and Fleming Community Center and Park is one of the county’s many treasures that deserves continued investment,” Klausmeier said. “Updating and creating improved access to the fishing pier ensures families, neighbors, and visitors can continue to enjoy the waterfront for generations.”

PROJECT FUNDING

The $1 million project included replacing the pier and adding an accessible path from the parking lot.

Funding for the improvements came from two sources:

  • $600,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act
  • $400,000 from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Local Parks and Playground Infrastructure program

RECENT COUNTY PROJECTS

The Fleming Park pier is the latest in a series of improvements to the county’s public spaces. The Department of Recreation and Parks recently opened an accessible path at Rocky Point Park and Beach and completed the new Sparrows Point Park in March 2025. The Middle River Recreation Activity Center also opened in the summer of 2024.

“Parks are hubs for communities, and the people we serve know that investing in communities produces results,” said Bob Smith, the director of Recreation and Parks.

Fleming Park is a 20-acre waterfront park that also features athletic fields, ball diamonds, multipurpose courts, a pavilion, picnic areas, and a playground. The Department of Recreation and Parks’ fall season programs are now underway, and a program guide can be found on the county’s website.
