Ice Road: Vengeance
Netflix
The Netflix top 10 movie list can be extremely funny, as at any given moment, a movie that no one has ever seen or heard of can rocket to become the most-watched movie in America in any given moment. And that’s exactly what’s happened with this new Liam Neeson action flick.
The movie is Ice Road: Vengeance. I thought that vaguely sounded like a sequel title and sure enough it is. The original Ice Road was released in 2021, and Neeson is back for more ice-based action.
Ice Road: Vengeance is awful. The movie has a 17% critic score and a 28% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 4.8/10 on IMDB. Not that the first film was much better with its 43% and 31% scores respectively.
How is this doing so well? This is the good old “people see actor they like in the thumbnail and click the movie” situation on Netflix, where they have exactly no rating system telling viewers if they are about to watch something awesome or terrible. You have to go do that research yourself, or just hand it 90 minutes of your time. I’m guessing some people are regretting that now.
Liam Neeson’s career is fascinating with some hugely iconic roles, but after Taken, something changed. He then started to make an endless series of Taken-like action movies that are just overwhelmingly not good. A sampling would be The Marksman, Honest Thief, Cold Pursuit, Memory, Blacklight, Retribution, Absolution and now two Ice Road movies. But then, just now, he starred in The Naked Gun, one of the most funny movies in recent years with Neeson’s expert comedic timing, something not showcased in those other movies.
But even among those other films, if we’re stacking up scores, Ice Road: Vengeance is easily one of the worst, and it would seem wise to avoid it at all costs, even if the Netflix top 10 list is telling you that it’s popular right now. They will not tell you how bad it is. Off the top of my head, you can watch a million better action movies on Netflix like Extraction, Plane, Den of Thieves 2, Triple Frontier, The Man from Uncle, The Equalizer, Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, Edge of Tomorrow, the list goes on. Just not Ice Road: Vengeance please. There is just no reason to do that to yourself.
