OCEAN CITY, MD—Gov. Wes Moore attended the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association and Maryland Sheriffs’ Association’s annual public safety conference on Monday to honor law enforcement officers from across the state, praising them for their service and partnership in achieving a historic drop in crime.
Speaking to more than 350 leaders in law enforcement, Moore said that Maryland has seen “some of the most impressive drops in crime in the entire country” due to the contributions of the state’s police and sheriffs.
“Today’s honorees are the best of our state, the ones who run toward danger when others run from it,” Moore said. “Through the extraordinary contributions of our brave men and women in uniform, Maryland has delivered some of the most impressive drops in crime in the entire country.”
During an awards ceremony, Moore presented the Valor Award to Deputy First Class Mark Shayne and Deputy Earl Buffa of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office for rescuing a woman from a burning car.
Officer First Class Joseph DeBronzo and Officer First Class Christopher Weir of the Howard County Police Department received the Medal of Honor for running toward gunfire to save a mother and child.
The governor also presented the Exceptional Police Performance award to officers of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police for their heroic actions leading up to and following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
Maryland Chiefs of Police Association Incoming President Stephen Yates expressed his appreciation for the governor’s presence and commitment.
“We are immensely proud of the dedication and sacrifice of these brave men and women, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the governor as we work to strengthen safety, effectiveness, and public trust in Maryland’s finest,” Yates said.
The Moore-Miller Administration has demonstrated its support for law enforcement with historic investments, including nearly $122 million in the FY 2026 state budget to support local police statewide.
