BALTIMORE, MD—Two Maryland residents, a woman from Fallston and a man from Middle River, have each claimed a $50,000 lottery prize, according to recent announcements from the Maryland Lottery. The winners secured their prizes on two different games—a scratch-off ticket and a Powerball drawing.
Patricia Dowdy of Fallston, a self-proclaimed lottery enthusiast, won her $50,000 prize on a “Let’s Make a Deal®” scratch-off. The win was a result of a cascading series of luck; she first won $25 on a “Lucky 7s” scratch-off, which she then used to buy five “Let’s Make a Deal®” tickets. She initially believed the winning ticket was worth only $50, but quickly realized she had overlooked three zeros, revealing the $50,000 prize. Dowdy purchased the winning ticket at the Wawa located at 1419 South Mountain Road in Joppa. Her prize marks the fifth of the seven original $50,000 top prizes claimed in the game.
Separately, a Middle River man who rarely plays the lottery won a $50,000 Powerball prize after purchasing tickets for the recent $1.7 billion jackpot drawing. The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, said he purchased $100 worth of tickets because of the record-breaking prize. He found out he had won while on the phone with his mother, who read off the winning numbers. He matched all but one of the numbers on his ticket. The man said he was in disbelief and had a friend scan the ticket at a lottery retailer before confirming the win a second time on the Maryland Lottery smartphone app.
“I was alone, so I ran around celebrating like a kid with a sugar rush,” he said with a laugh. “I was honestly so surprised because I don’t play the lottery at all.”
The Powerball ticket was sold at the Royal Farms store at 406 Bowleys Quarters Road in Baltimore County.
