Sean Combs: The Reckoning, produced by 50 Cent, is finally here on Netflix. Ahead of the release, Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ legal team sent the streaming giant a cease-and-desist letter to halt its release. A recent statement also accused 50 Cent and Netflix of using stolen footage for the documentary series. This has raised questions about whether Diddy is suing 50 Cent for the documentary.
Is Sean Diddy Combs suing 50 Cent for Netflix Show?
No, Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently behind bars, is not suing 50 Cent or Netflix, as of now. However, Combs’ legal team sent Netflix a cease-and-desist letter attempting to halt the release of the four-part docu-series. The legal team further warned that they will pursue more legal options if needed.
Despite the cease-and-desist letter, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, the documentary is already out and streaming on the platform.
“Today’s GMA teaser confirms that Netflix relied on stolen footage that was never authorized for release,” a statement from Diddy’s team read (via The Guardian). “As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way. It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”
However, the director of the docu-series, Alexandra Stapleton, claimed that they obtained all the footage legally and have the necessary rights to it.
In Combs’ original statement, the music mogul accused Netflix of sensationalizing the case. “Netflix is plainly desperate to sensationalize every minute of Mr. Combs’s life, without regard for truth, in order to capitalize on a never-ending media frenzy,” the statement read. “If Netflix cared about truth or about Mr. Combs’s legal rights, it would not be ripping private footage out of context – including conversations with his lawyers that were never intended for public viewing. No rights in that material were ever transferred to Netflix or any third party.”
As of now, the docu-series continues to stream. There may be further legal action from Sean Combs’ legal team, especially against 50 Cent. But nothing of that sort has happened yet.
