JOPPA, MD—A key section of Bridge Drive in Joppatowne is slated for a complete closure for about six weeks, beginning on or around Monday, October 20, as Harford County begins crucial maintenance and repair work on the bridge over the Gunpowder River.
Road Closure Details
The closure will affect the stretch of Bridge Drive between Towne Center Drive and Shore Drive. Motorists who regularly use this route are advised to anticipate the disruption and follow all posted detour signs or plan alternate travel routes.
It is important to note that emergency vehicles and school buses will be completely restricted from crossing the bridge throughout the duration of the work. Pedestrian traffic will also need to follow the designated detour route. The project is expected to last until late November.
Navigational Warning for Mariners
In addition to the road closure, the maintenance work will impact the Gunpowder River (Joppatowne Canal) for mariners.
The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a local notice, alerting boaters that a construction firm working for the Harford County Department of Public Works will be performing maintenance on the fixed spans of the Bridge Drive bridge (mile 0.8).
Mariners should be aware of a working barge that will be intermittently blocking the navigational channel during daytime work hours, specifically 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, from October 13, 2025, through November 21, 2025. The barge will be moved clear of the channel during non-working hours.
Boaters are urged to use extreme caution when passing through the area. The project manager will be monitoring VHF-FM channel 13 for communication with vessels.
