‘This Is Something That Everyone In America’ Does

CNN anchor Kasie Hunt defended New York Attorney General Letitia James after she was indicted on charges related to mortgage fraud, Thursday, arguing that James’ alleged crime was “something that everyone in America” does.

Reacting to James’ indictment on CNN’s The Arena, Hunt said, “We’re still getting the details, but if it’s related to this mortgage issue, I mean this is something that everyone in America, or many people at least, if you’re lucky enough to be able to buy a house in America, you deal with this, right? The federal government doesn’t go after all of these people for doing this.”

She questioned, “Does that play a role here? I mean, how often has there been a federal indictment for a bank fraud type of situation like the one we see here?”

Hunt’s remarks were criticized on social media.

“CNN’s [Kasie] Hunt, who rivals CNN’s [Abby Phillip] for the ‘dumbest news anchor on television,’ attempted to defend Letitia James by claiming that everyone in America who buys a house does the same thing as James but doesn’t get investigated,” wrote Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz. “Wrong, Kasie. Not everyone who buys a house commits mortgage fraud!”

“These clowns make it so easy,” weighed in Fox Business contributor Gary Kaltbaum.

James lashed out at President Donald Trump following her indictment on Thursday, accusing the president of engaging in “political retribution” against her.

“This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system,” she wrote. “He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to do his bidding, all because I did my job as the New York State Attorney General.”
