TOWSON, MD—Baltimore County homicide detectives have filed charges in a 31-year-old cold case, arresting a 68-year-old man Thursday in the 1994 murder of his estranged wife, who worked as a county 911 police dispatcher.
Donald Lester, 68, was charged with the murder of Linda Lester, 31, the Baltimore County Police Department announced Friday. He is currently being held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
Linda Lester was last seen alive on Oct. 11, 1994, as she was leaving her job to go to Donald Lester’s home. The couple was going through a divorce at the time, and Linda Lester was scheduled to pick up their 2-year-old child.
Forensic Evidence Provides Break
Linda Lester was reported missing by her sister the following day. Her body was discovered days later off Interstate 70. Although detectives questioned Donald Lester shortly after her disappearance, the case went cold for decades.
According to police, the break in the case came from forensic evidence collected from the victim at the time of the original investigation. That evidence recently provided detectives with the necessary proof to file charges against Donald Lester.
The police department credited the advancements in forensic science and the assistance of outside agencies for the successful arrest.
“The Baltimore County Police Department extends its gratitude to DNA Labs International and its commitment to this case,” the department said in a statement, also recognizing the support of the Maryland State Police, Forensic Sciences Division.
DNA Labs International is a private forensic DNA laboratory that works to support law enforcement across the U.S. and internationally.
