NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — If you find yourself driving either down Virginia Beach Boulevard or Military Highway, you may have noticed at the corner of a very busy intersection fences put up around the underpasses on either side of the Boulevard.
A Norfolk resident, who identified himself as Eric, sat and watched as it happened.
“City came out that it marked off and everything and just popped it up. Did you see them put the fences up? Oh yeah. But what happened? They just came in, lined it up, popped the posts in.”
According to Eric it took the city three days to just that. In that time period social media has been buzzing as to why the city would put up fences in an area widely known for attracting the homeless. Even some of those in the unhoused community had concerns.
“Every once in a while, somebody would come in to crash and stay. Crash for a while, but then they would get up in the sleeve for leader stuff, and it just go.”
10 On Your Side reached out to the city to find out why the fence was put out and, in a statement, they said…
“The fenced off areas will be laydown areas for the upcoming Military Highway overpass repairs project,” the city said in a statement, though it wanted to make clear the fence had nothing to do with the homeless in the area.
There is no word on when the repairs to the overpass will begin.
