TOWSON, MD—Towson University (TU) has achieved its highest placement yet in the annual U.S. News and World Report regional “Best College” rankings, climbing to No. 3 among public universities in the North, the university has announced.

The ranking is a jump of two spots from last year, solidifying TU’s growing national recognition. The university also moved up four spots to No. 11 overall among both public and private institutions in the region. The North region in this year’s rankings includes 170 universities, 61 of which are public, across 11 states from Maine to Maryland.

The regional placements, which align with TU’s current Carnegie Classification, are determined by factors such as student outcomes, graduation rates, Pell performance, post-graduate earnings, quality of instruction, and institutional peer assessment.

“TU’s reputation for excellence goes beyond academic achievement,” said President Mark R. Ginsberg. “Time after time, our university is recognized for inclusive student success. No matter where you’re from or where you aspire to go, TU will meet you with an affordable path to life-changing opportunities.”

Additional Regional Recognitions

In addition to its top-tier regional standing, TU received recognition in several other key areas within the North:

  • No. 4 university for veterans
  • No. 16 most innovative school
  • No. 48 university for social mobility
  • No. 64 university for best value

Veteran and Social Mobility Support

For the third consecutive year, TU was ranked as a top five school for veterans in the North, and the best in Maryland, a distinction credited to the university’s Military and Veterans Center.

“Our veteran students bring invaluable experience, leadership and perspective to our campus community,” said Vernon Hurte, senior vice president for student affairs and university life.

TU was also highlighted for its performance in social mobility, which evaluates the success of Pell Grant recipients. TU’s minority and Pell-eligible students graduate at a rate 12% higher than their peers nationally.

Innovation and Affordability

TU made its debut on the “most innovative” list, which is based on a survey of top academics who identify universities making cutting-edge developments in curriculum, student support, and campus technology.

The university was also ranked the No. 2 value in Maryland. The best value rankings consider academic quality alongside price, the percentage of students receiving need-based aid, and the average discount available to students.
