We recently wrote posts where doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals revealed the biggest “health mistakes” you should never make, as well as the bad habits that are actually ruining your health. In the comments, more professionals revealed common mistakes and bad health advice you may not realize you’re following, and it’s eye-opening. Here’s what they had to say:
1. “I’m an infectious disease sub-specialist. PEOPLE! You need to SLEEP! You can select one day a month to scroll until 4 a.m., BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOME DISCIPLINE. Set the clock for 9:30 p.m.; get your brain ready for bed by 10 and turn off the lights, TV, and devices. At least 28 days a month, do what it takes to have a good night’s sleep.”

2. “Therapist here. Don’t skip weight training. Life-long resistance training is essential to safety as you age and your ability to live out your days in your home.”

3. “Oncologist here: Ivermectin and ‘detox’ supplements are not proven cancer treatments. Ivermectin can also lead to other organ damage and interfere with some cancer-directed therapies. Tell your doctor if you are taking Ivermectin or any other supplements.”
“It’s so terrible to see patients replace scientifically proven therapies with the above, then come back with a terrible disease.”

4. “Don’t wear hair clips whilst driving! I’ve seen even a minor fender bender embed the teeth of someone’s hairclip into their scalp…and of course, worse. Hair ties or flat clips only, please.”

5. “I’m a registered nurse. If you’re visiting the hospital with a baby, toddler, or any small child, NEVER let them crawl on any floor in the hospital! It might look very clean, but it’s absolutely NOT sterile, or germ-free, in any way! You don’t want the bacteria, germs, or viruses that health care workers have walked through to get anywhere near your child’s mouth, eyes, or nose. I’m shocked and horrified any time I see someone put their young children on the hospital floor to crawl around and ‘explore’ such a dangerous and contagious place.”
“I have handed out many bottles of hand sanitizers and explanations to many people who think that it’s okay to put a child on the hospital floor. Please don’t, just don’t. “

6. “Behavioral sleep medicine specialist here. WEAR YOUR CPAP! Get treated for insomnia. Poor, insufficient sleep increases your risk for stroke, heart attack, obesity, diabetes, dementia, mental health issues, and cancer, like everything. See a board-certified BSM specialist (DBSM credential) for insomnia.”
“We can fix you without the use of medications. And we can help you get used to your CPAP, fix nightmares, etc.”

7. “Not taking care of your teeth and mouth. Brush and floss well, morning and evening. And after you eat or drink anything sugary during the day, try to drink/swish around a little water immediately after. Good dental hygiene lowers the risk of seemingly unrelated conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, Alzheimer’s, and cardiovascular disease.”

9. “I work with patients in end-stage kidney failure. Turmeric supplements can potentially be very damaging to the internal structure of your kidneys. While turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties can benefit some, turmeric pills and supplements can potentially act as vasodilators, lowering blood pressure. If you don’t have high blood pressure, a vasodilator can restrict blood flow in the delicate internal structure of the kidneys, essentially choking them off. Most over-the-counter turmeric supplements are poorly regulated. If you want to benefit from turmeric, it’s best to consume it in a pure form, rather than the mystery amalgamation you get from supplements.”
“The overuse (more than directed on the bottle, or over a great length of time) of Advil and other over-the-counter painkillers can do the same thing. Protect your kidneys, folks!!! Dialysis is not a fun process, and once your kidneys go, your only option is dialysis or transplant.”

10. “Protect your eyes from the sun. Ultraviolet rays are active even when it’s cloudy. This is how crow’s-feet develop around the eyes. Wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes is essential. I see people wearing them on their forehead, cap, or backwards.”

12. “I definitely agree that it’s not recommended to have a protein-only diet. Diet has to be wholesome, well-rounded, and balanced with an emphasis on protein. Eliminating other food groups won’t help. You need carbs, but opt for complex carbohydrates. You need fats for good bowel movements; fiber alone won’t suffice. Opt for good fats and less saturated fats, cholesterol, and trans fats.”

13. “Stress. It wreaks havoc in ways you couldn’t imagine. The cellular oxidative stress from chronic exposure and methylation is mind-boggling. And it impacts the glymphatic system, which messes up your brain worse than alcohol.”
