Mohammed Ibrahim, jailed for stone-throwing since February, is set to meet the new State Department official next week amid calls for his release.

The US State Department has reportedly appointed a dedicated official to handle the case of a dual national American-Palestinian teenager who has been held in an Israeli military prison for over seven months, The Guardian first reported on Saturday.

A State Department spokesperson told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday that “whenever a US citizen is detained abroad, the Department works to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” but declined to comment further, citing “privacy and other considerations.”

According to The Guardian, Mohammed Ibrahim was arrested at his house in the West Bank for throwing rocks at Israeli vehicles in February, and has been held at Ofer military prison ever since. Stone throwing in Israel carries up to 20 years in prison and a minimum of 4 years.

Ibrahim is reportedly scheduled to meet with the new State Department official next week. This comes amid intensified efforts by Ibrahim’s family to have him released.

At the end of August, a group of more than 100 US human rights, faith-based, and civil rights organizations wrote a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding his release.

The coalition, including the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), cited Ibrahim’s deteriorating health as a reason to expedite his release.

‘Responsibility of US gov’t to protect all US citizens, including Palestinian-Americans,’ letter argues

“Mohammed is an American child with a community in Florida who cares about him deeply,” the organizations wrote in the letter. “It is the responsibility of the US government to protect all American children, including Palestinian-Americans.”

The Post reached out to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit for comment.
