BALTIMORE, MD—A Baltimore man described by prosecutors as a repeat violent offender has been sentenced to life plus 35 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man in the city’s Frankford neighborhood last year.

State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates announced Thursday that Amir Barnes-Henderson received the sentence for first-degree murder and related charges in the death of Gary Lee Matthews. Assistant State’s Attorney Elizabeth Stock prosecuted the case.

“This sentence ensures that an individual capable of brutal and repeated acts of violence stays off our streets and out of our communities,” Bates said in a statement. “My office remains committed to removing these types of violent repeat offenders from the community…”

The shooting occurred on Nov. 21, 2024. A Baltimore Police Northeast District patrol officer responded to reports of a shooting in the 4900 Block of Frankford Avenue at approximately 5:22 p.m.

Officers found Matthews unresponsive at the scene, and he was pronounced dead shortly after at 5:30 p.m.

Investigators determined that the victim and Barnes-Henderson had been involved in a verbal altercation at the nearby One Stop Liquor Store just before the shooting. Witnesses provided details of the dispute and the subsequent shooting.

Authorities noted that Barnes-Henderson had multiple prior misdemeanor convictions involving handguns, which prohibited him from legally possessing a firearm.

Bates extended his condolences to Matthews’ loved ones, stating that the sentence brings “some closure to this devastating chapter in their lives.”
